About general tank inspection
Not all storage tanks fall within the scope of EEMUA 159. Tanks come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, materials and configurations, and many operate in service conditions that call for a more flexible inspection approach.
At Vertek we carry out structured inspections on tanks outside the EEMUA scope, applying relevant industry codes and good engineering practice proportionate to the tank type, stored product and operating environment. Rather than forcing a single standard onto every asset, we take a best-fit approach, drawing on the applicable sections of recognised codes so that each assessment is technically sound and appropriate to the tank in front of us.

We assess structural integrity, identify deterioration such as corrosion, cracking and settlement, and evaluate the effect on continued safe operation. Where external access is limited, corrosion mapping is used to assess wall condition and remaining life.

Reporting and recommendations
Every inspection produces a clear, practical report rather than a raw data sheet. We set out the findings, the deterioration mechanisms identified and the condition of the tank, alongside recommendations that are proportionate to the risk.
Because the same team can carry out the inspection and any supporting work, follow-on activity such as cleaning, lagging removal or repair planning is carried out with a clear understanding of what the inspection actually requires.

Regulatory context
These tanks may not fall under a specific inspection code, but they are not exempt from regulatory scrutiny. Under PUWER, any work equipment that can deteriorate and give rise to a risk must be maintained in a safe condition and, where appropriate, inspected by a competent person. For storage tanks this duty is often overlooked, yet operators hold a clear duty of care whether or not a formal inspection code applies.
