HSE Improvement Notices

An improvement or enforcement notice needs a measured, evidenced response. We help operators understand what is being asked, plan the remediation and produce the inspection evidence to show it is done.

About the service

About improvement notice support

An improvement notice from the HSE, or an improvement or enforcement notice from the Environment Agency, sets a requirement and a date by which it must be met. The wording can be broad, and it is not always obvious what will satisfy the regulator or how best to get there.

We help operators work through exactly that. First we establish what the notice is really asking for and how it relates to the relevant standards and the condition of the plant. Then we help plan the remediation, whether that involves inspection, assessment, repair or a change to how equipment is managed.

Because we carry out inspection ourselves, we can also generate the evidence that demonstrates the requirement has been met, and present it in a form the regulator will recognise.

Why it matters

Why this support matters

Clarity first

A clear reading of what the notice actually requires before any work begins.

A route to compliance

A practical remediation plan with the steps and evidence needed to close the notice out.

Evidence that stands up

Inspection records and documentation presented in a form the regulator will recognise.

Support throughout

Help from receipt of the notice through to demonstrating the requirement is met.

Deliverables

What you receive

You receive the inspection evidence and documentation needed to demonstrate that the requirement of the notice has been addressed, set out clearly and referenced to the relevant standards.

Where remediation is required, we provide a plan that identifies the actions, the inspection that supports them and the point at which the requirement can be considered met.

The documentation is prepared so it can be presented to the HSE or Environment Agency, giving you a clear and defensible account of the steps taken and the evidence behind them.

A note on notices

An improvement notice requires a contravention to be put right within a stated period, while a prohibition notice can stop an activity where there is a risk of serious personal injury. The Environment Agency has comparable enforcement powers where environmental duties are engaged, including in relation to containment and pollution prevention. In every case the practical need is the same: understand the requirement, act on it and be able to show, with evidence, that it has been met.
